Cellulose-binding family II/chitobiase, carbohydrate-binding domain
This carbohydrate-binding domain is present in two <db_xref db="EC" dbkey="3.2.1"/> families: the chitobiase family of glycoside hydrolases (N-terminal), and in bacterial type-II cellulases and xylanases. Chitobiases degrade chitin, which forms the exoskeleton in insects and crustaceans, and which is one of the most abundant polysaccharides on earth []. Bacterial type-II cellulases and xylanases degrade cellulose and xylans, respectively; this domain can be located either N- or C-terminal to the catalytic domain in these bacterial enzymes [].
